Shipmates hope to save terminally-ill sailor’s home from foreclosure – WAVY

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Hundreds of volunteers are rallying around a former Norfolk sailor who has been unable to sell his Chesapeake home.

Petty Officer Nick Salter worked at Naval Station Norfolk for six years before he was reassigned in New Mexico. He was diagnosed with skin cancer eight years ago. In 2014, the cancer spread to his brain, and more recently his health has weakened.

The Salter family put their Lambert Trail home on the market in April. Since then, they’ve had no offers because of the home’s poor condition.

Salter’s medical issues have forced the family to put the sale of their home on the back burner.

Now, close friends and colleagues from Naval Station Norfolk are working to restore the home in order to get it sold.

“We’re all out here just doing what we can to help my best buddy out,” said Ken Morris, a fellow chief petty officer. “They’re haven’t been any offers on it yet, so we’re just trying to make this top notch and get it up on the market so these guys can get out of the little bit of trouble that they’re in.”

Morris is one of more than 300 volunteers who have been to the home to help.

Organizers say the every room inside the house will be refurbished. The inside of the home will get new cabinetry and a fresh coat of paint. The work outside will consist of sprucing up the curb appeal, along with a new roof and new deck.

“He was too stubborn to ask for help whenever he needed it,” said Morris. “They kind of reached out last minute and this is what you get … there’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears going into right now.”

The goal of the project is to get the home sold. It’s currently on the market for $199,950, according to the family.

Organizer Kristy Spurgeon can be reached at (757) 344-8953.
